  34.      This medication should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed
  35. container.
  36.  
  37. USES
  38.  
  39.      Bendroflumethiazide is prescribed to treat high blood pressure.  It is
  40. also used to reduce fluid accumulation in the body caused by conditions such
  41. as heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease, and the long-term
  42. use of some medications.  This medication reduces fluid accumulation by
  43. increasing the elimination of salt and water through the kidneys.
  44.  
  45. TREATMENT
  46.  
  47.      To decrease stomach irritation, you can take this medication with a glass
  48. of milk or with a meal (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).  Try
  49. to take it at the same time every day.  Avoid taking a dose after 6:00 P.M.;
  50. otherwise, you may have to get up during the night to urinate.
  51.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  52. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  53. take the missed dose at all; just wait until the next scheduled dose.  Do not
  54. double the dose.
  55.      This medication does not cure high blood pressure, but it will help to
  56. control the condition as long as you continue to take it.
  57.  
  58. SIDE EFFECTS
  59.  
  60.      Minor.
  61.  
  62.      Constipation, cramps, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache,
  63. heartburn, loss of appetite, restlessness, or upset stomach.  As your body
  64. adjusts to the medication, these side effects should disappear.
  65.      This medication can cause increased sensitivity to sunlight.  It is,
  66. therefore, important to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and sunlamps.
  67. Wear protective clothing and use an effective sunscreen.
  68.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  69. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads) and exercise more
  70. (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).
  71.      To avoid dizziness or light-headedness when you stand, contract and relax
  72. the muscles of your legs for a few moments before rising.  Do this by pushing
  73. one foot against the floor while raising the other foot slightly, alternating
  74. feet so that you are "pumping" your legs in a pedaling motion.
  75.  
  76.      Major.
  77.  
  78.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  79. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  80. blurred vision, confusion, difficulty in breathing, dry mouth, excessive
  81. thirst, excessive weakness, fever, itching, joint pain, mood changes, muscle
  82. pain or spasms, nausea, palpitations, skin rash, sore throat, tingling in the
  83. fingers or toes, unusual bleeding or bruising, vomiting, or yellowing of the
  84. eyes or skin.

  86. INTERACTIONS
  87.  
  88.      This drug interacts with several other drugs:
  89.      1. It may decrease the effectiveness of oral anticoagulants, antigout
  90. medications, insulin, oral antidiabetic medicines, and methenamine.
  91.      2. Fenfluramine can increase the blood-pressure-lowering effects of
  92. bendroflumethiazide (which can be dangerous).
  93.      3. Indomethacin can decrease the blood-pressure-lowering effects of
  94. bendroflumethiazide, thereby counteracting the desired effects.
  95.      4. Cholestyramine and colestipol decrease the absorption of this
  96. medication from the gastrointestinal tract.  Bendroflumethiazide should,
  97. therefore, be taken one hour before or four hours after a dose of
  98. cholestyramine or colestipol (if you have also been prescribed one of these
  99. medications).
  100.      5. The side effects of amphotericin B, calcium, cortisone-like steroids
  101. (such as cortisone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone, prednisone, and
  102. prednisolone), digoxin, digitalis, lithium, quinidine, sulfonamide
  103. antibiotics, and vitamin D may be increased by bendroflumethiazide.
  104.      BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any medications you are currently
  105. taking, especially any of those listed above.
  106.  
  107. WARNINGS
  108.  
  109.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  110. any medications, especially to diuretics or any other sulfa drugs, including
  111. oral antidiabetic medications or sulfonamide antibiotics.
  112.      * Before you start taking bendroflumethiazide, tell your doctor if you
  113. now have or if you have ever had kidney disease or problems with urination,
  114. diabetes mellitus, gout, liver disease, asthma, pancreatic disease, or
  115. systemic lupus erythematosus.
  116.      * Bendroflumethiazide can cause potassium loss.  Signs of potassium loss
  117. include dry mouth, thirst, weakness, muscle pain or cramps, nausea, and
  118. vomiting.  If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor.  To help
  119. avoid potassium loss, take this drug with a glass of fresh or frozen orange
  120. juice or cranberry juice, or eat a banana every day.  The use of a salt
  121. substitute also helps to prevent potassium loss.  Do not change your diet or
  122. use a salt substitute, however, before discussing it with your doctor.  Too
  123. much potassium can also be dangerous.  Your doctor may want you to have blood
  124. tests performed periodically in order to monitor your potassium levels.
  125.      * Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages while taking this medication,
  126. in order to prevent dizziness and light-headedness.
  127.      * If you have high blood pressure, do not take any over-the-counter
  128. (nonprescription) medications for weight control or for allergy, asthma,
  129. cough, cold, or sinus problems unless your doctor directs you to do so.
  130.      * To prevent dehydration (severe water loss) while taking this
  131. medication, check with your doctor if you have any illness that causes severe
  132. or continuous nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  133.      * This medication can raise blood sugar in diabetic patients.  Therefore,
  134. blood sugar levels should be carefully monitored by blood or urine tests when
  135. this medication is being taken.
  136.      * This product contains the color additive FD&C Yellow No. 5
  137. (tartrazine), which can cause allergic-type reactions (rash, fainting,
  138. difficulty in breathing) in certain susceptible individuals.
  139.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Bendroflumethiazide
  140. can cross the placenta and may cause adverse effects in the developing fetus.
  141. Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  Although problems
  142. in humans have not been reported, small amounts of this drug can pass into
  143. breast milk, so caution is warranted.
